YMCA Bedfordshire established itself in the county back in 1986 with its first hostel (Weaver House) opening in 1991. They have since grown to 7 hostels, all of which are funded via housing benefit and Supporting People contracts. Several of their support services, such as the women’s refuges, are local council funded. Including specific housing grants 81% of their income is related to the provision of social housing, mainly housing disadvantaged people on benefit who are unable to find accommodation elsewhere.
In 2006 the YMCA became a delivery partner for the Princes Trust ‘Team Programme‘, offering training to those not in employment, education or training including those leaving care, ex-offenders or educational under achievers. These courses are funded by Skills Funding Agency through further education colleges.
In September 2015 they took on the responsibility for running and financing the activities of a small independent charity, Fun 4 Young People (F4YP), to help secure its future. This charity provides after school and holiday activities and serves young people from some of the most deprived areas of Kempston.
